WAY OFF TOPIC but...

Just wondering why so many Americans/ex Americans use the word "lightening" (to make lighter) rather than the word "lightning" (a bolt/sheet of visible electricity in the sky)? I've seen this in so many places including online literature that it's made me curious.

I don't know (and I'm hardly an authority of modern English :-) but it
might be how we pronounce the word. But you are right that the
correct spelling is "lightning".
Next time I'll write "a flash of light" :-)
