Cycle jerseys often have a pouch at the back designed to carry food and drink for those who don't want the extra weight of bottle cages or luggage.
I prefer the luggage option (JVTV flashback) as my bicycle is a utility vehicle not a tennis racket.

Mine have 3 pockets and when I used to cycle to work, the left had my 160GB i-pod in it, the right my wallet and the middle held a baguette for lunch.

I ride a Dawes Karakum which is comfortable but heavy. Hub dynamo, magura rim brakes and a rear rack.
I use a right pannier with puncture kit, tube, tool kit. Commuting adds wallet, phone, ID card and clothing.
Sometimes I have been tempted to add a copy of the Highway Code to show to motorists who insist cyclists are required by law to use cycle paths but ASL's are optional for bus and taxi drivers.
