And that's about a million miles away from a medal in that event. I'm
guessing they would be close to getting lapped by the riders the US had
in the mid 1990s, the only group to produce medals.

Compare this year's times to what was going on over a decade ago at
an outdoor track.

Granted the team pursuit seems to be targeted for elimination. And
granted those are all young guys. But the distance between a 4:25 and
relevance is large.

Don't know if this is the case, so I won't declare it as such, Kunich-
style, but... there's a good chance they cobbled that team together
the morning of the event or a few days before, at most. With a bit of
proper training for the TP, they will likely be much faster. Whether
they'd have a chance at medalling on an international level, that's
yet to be seen.
