A 60-year-old woman has been jailed for running over a man lying on the
road and driving off because she ‘thought he was a scarecrow’. Marian
Watt, of South Town Road, Alton, Hampshire, was sentenced to one year at
Winchester Crown Court after she was found guilty of causing serious
injury by dangerous driving. Laurence John, 55, was left with
‘life-changing injuries’ after he was hit by the 3,300kg (519st) Toyota
Land Cruiser on a narrow road outside the Yew Tree pub in Alresford on
25 November, last year.

A year at Winchester Crown Court sounds like an effective deterrent, I
suppose.

But soft! Whence comes this "cyclist" business?

The BBC report https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-45990346

....contains the informatio:n "...The court heard Mr John "wasn't drunk
but at most a little merry" when he left the Yew Tree to walk home alone
on 25 November 2017."

Nothing about a bicycle.

The Guardian (incorporating The Whingers' Gazette) doesn't appear to run
the story at all (surprising if he were a cyclist, not necessarily so
otherwise). The Telegraph
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/10/26/motorist-jailed-running-man-lying-road-thought-scarecrow-even/
also has the "he left to walk home" snippet and mentions no bicycles
except for remarking that "mountain biking" would be something he had to
gib=ve up.

Various local rags mention the case, but a bicycle.

The press operates in mysterious ways. Well, at least, the Metro does.
