Default Shipping of Bicycle Framesets

At the bike shop where I work, we only ever use Bikeflights or Shipbikes anymore. It's contracted to the usual parcel services, but the cost is a small fraction as much. In most cases, we can have the customer make the arrangements, and we only have to tape a label onto the box.

I'll keep that in mind Chalo. But when I called UPS they quoted me $600 for shipping across the US whereas USPS was $163.50 (And I had to buy the box)

I just got a Shipbikes online quote for shipping a frame-sized box (42" x 27" x 7") with a weight of 25 lbs. from Boston to San Diego. It was $58.

Was that a private or commercial rate?

There is a rate. It's DIM based, that is, weight and volume.
Keeping an eye to total carton weight _and_ carton
dimensions[1], you can drop into a significantly lower rate
than another guy crating the same bike (or frame).

After that there are discounts. You, a walk-in retail
customer, get no discount. We get a puny discount although
it was much bigger when we were using more international
freight services. Shipbikes.com and other brokers get enough
discount to profitably land you a better price and still
make a buck. Discounts are based on annual billings, BTW.

[1]A frame carton cut from a standard bike carton can be
eight or even nine inches wide. Ouch. Trimming to six inch
width (as Chalo notes above) brings down the total carton
volume and hence the rate.

For a bike, it's going to be entirely dimensional weight. Carriers
want their trucks (and planes, and drones, and trebuchets) to hit
their weight and volume capacity simultaneously. That means they want
packages that weigh about 10 pounds per cubic foot[1]. Stuff that's
denser than that gets charged weight, stuff less dense than that goes
as if it weighs that much.

Fiddling around with the UPS shipping label generator, it quotes me
57.92 (published 62.95) to ship a 27 X 42 X6 box (volume just under 4
cubic feet) weighing 49 pounds or less. 50 pounds, rate goes up.
Incresing the depth to 7 inches, which makes the volume go to 4.6 cubic
feet, raises the rate to $62.43 (published, $67.86) for 58 pounds or
fewer. That's San diego zoo to boston zoo, ground. My discount is what
they give anyone who opens an account.

[1] actual numbers vary based on carrier and class of service, but
that's the current typical number. It's gone up several times over
the last decade. This is one of the thing that high volume shipper
negioate. I'd be very surprised if Amazon were paying UPS dimensional
weight at the same targets as I am.
