Default tips/tricks for installing replacement ergopower brake hoods?

i just %#@%$#ing tore a pair of them whilst trying to install. i lubed
the bodies w/ windex while they were firmly mounted on handlebars. is
there some trick to this? maybe heat in some hot water?
