Who was killed by a cyclist? Kim Briggs was killed by Charlie Alliston. "You have throughout sought to put your blame on her," the judge said to him. "Perhaps one of the most shocking things about this case is that you could not and apparently cannot still see any fault in your cycling or judgment." |

What is peculiar about a cyclist knocking someone over that is not peculiar about a driver knocking someone over? Almost no identified motorist who knocks over a blind pedestrian on a pedestrian crossing escapes prosecution. On the other hand, the cyclist in question has done. Don't blame cyclists. It's a matter for the authorities. Additionally, a cyclist has to be exceeding the normal limits of riding a bicycle by a proportionally greater margin to cause such an accident as described than a motorist would while driving a car. The only thing that counts is the number and severity of casualties. Your idea is frankly stupid. I would add recklessness as an important factor. Motive is a matter of opinion. Casualties are the only physical thing that can be counted. When drivers are better than cyclists, let's talk about cyclists. My friend got knocked off her feet in Central London by a cyclist. She's never been hit by a car. It was a reckless cyclist. Most people get through their entire life without once being knocked over. The experience of one person is nothing to go on. My anecdote is that my mother in law was knocked over by a driver who did not stop. She spent a night in hospital. The driver obviously hadn't taken conditions into account. I think that makes it reckless. |

My anecdote is that I was on a pedestrian crossing with the pedestrian light green and a 'road tax paying law abiding' motorist overtook in the zigzags and would have hit me if I had crossed 1 second earlier. Obviously a cyclist's fault and my helmet would have saved my life had I been wearing one. Mike |
