Default Pic of Lemond winning 1989 World's...what's up with the wheel in their faces?

I've seen that photo a jillion times. It's a great one of Greg winning
in the rain. And poor Sean bursting into tears.

(I actually got to watch that one on live TV over in Europe. I was
jumping all over the place those last couple minutes of crazy
cliffhanger uber-boss-Greg action. It was the best! Any cooler recent
finishes?)

Well, I just saw a version of that photo that has a spare wheel in the
photo-frame right in front of Greg and Konyshev on the rightside of
the image. So there must have been a motor just a couple feet in front
of those guys going nuts in the rain and it wasn't even the motor with
the photog that took that pic. So there must have been at least two
bikes right in front of them. But that one on the right is RIGHT in
front of them.

I don't recall ever seeing that wheel in an image of that sprint
before. Maybe other shots are just the ones that have been used more.
Or maybe the wheel gets photoshopped out of the posters?

Then I googled for more images of that sprint and couldn't find a
thing. Sheesh.

Have other World's sprints been contested with vehicles within like 3
feet of the front of the cyclists? Heck, there must've been a draft
from those suckers even, big roostertail of water, the works. Crazy.

Jeff. You are such a douchebag. Words fail me.

This is an instance where your brain needed a 12 cog and
all you had was a tricycle.

I just watched the 89 worlds again. That wheel we see in the photo was
added digitaly or something & did not exist in the real world. The
Lemond years were some of the greatest in cycling! The comptition was
there between Hinault , Lemond & Fignon etc. The Bikes were cool with
Campy c-record as king. Cool sponcers with LVC & Team Z. The english
invasion.

Maybe it was someone's idea of cool design? Who knows. I was thinking
it came from a slightly different angle, but it does look simply added
to the image. Weird.

Yeah, lots of cool things happened then, but I'm also just refering to
the specific action itself. I recall there was one classic in the 80's
where a guy eased up slightly at the finish thinking he had it in the
bag and looked over the wrong shoulder and got nipped: a total
goof-up. The Criq World's protest seemed pretty big. Lemond's last
stage win over Fignon. And his rainy descent win at the 89 Worlds are
just amazing. Gotta include Kelly's uber-insane Milano-San-Remo
descent to win that classic in that list of shockingly great finish
action (it was pretty close to the end).

I don't recall as much nutty stuff happening these days. Sure, there's
fighting and hooking but it doesn't seem to happen in the biggest
events between the biggest stars. Well, if it does it would be neat to
see it listed. Sure, we have Lance's "look" but how does that compare
to the Greg-Bernie showdowns?

Indeed, Campy C-Record WAS king but the Mavic stuff was better designed,
lighter, had less rolling resistance and probably cost less. LeMond won the
'89 and '90 Tour on Mavic. I still have a set of Mavic hubs that roll easier
than any other wheelset I have.

Some of the Kelly-era Mavic even LOOKED cool, too. Had a neat clunky look as I
recall. Room for both looks back then. Elegant CC or machinelike Mavic. Today
just offers a bland robo-look. Unless folks have some cool group looks to
suggest? --How to make STI levers that don't look frontheavy, for instance.

Jeff, why are there no spokes in the 'wheel' in the picture? Seems
kind of strange, doesn't it? Especially since the wheel in the
picture isn't rotating, you would think they would be really easy
to see. Yet they appear to be missing.

On moron meters, you define your own scale. You're not smart enough
to figure out stupid you really are.

Lemond won in 90 using C record not Mavic. The 89 season was on mavic.

Yes i have to admit the Mavic stuff was very cool! Lemond That era of
cycling was just cool. Have you read the current isue of cycle sport?
super artical on Lemond.
