DfT Shop and Road Safety Literature
This poster issued by the Department for Transport, appears to be
ordering cyclists to 'take the lane' or ride in what is often referred to as 'The Primary Riding Position' (either that, or it is advising other road users that this is how cyclists should ride). The text states: CYCLISTS, RIDE CENTRAL ON NARROW ROADS http://shop.dft.gov.uk/thinkrsoshop/...0-64dbaf59c2c2 Have the DfT got it all wrong? Or are they now getting it right? |

Oh dear, rammings by car weapons (tm doug bollen) will increase. Or will they reduce? 'Rammings by car weapons' is not a particularly big problem as far as I know. Yes it does happen but it is quite rare. The biggest problem appears to be the side-swipe: where the car driver starts to overtake and then suddenly realises that there is not enough space to complete the manoeuvre. 'Ride central' (as the DfT like to call it) and it will reduce the chances of that happening, but when it does happen, there is space to move into or slow down into on the left thus avoiding a collision. |

I suggest that people email them at: and ask why they are promoting that poster which, as far as I know, that advice is not official Government Policy. If it is: where is it clearly stated? |

What would be the best course of action? a) To seek to understand the opponents point of view. b) To continue to argue ones own misguided point of view. c) Try to muster support from people who are equally ignorant of the subject concerned. Fantastic value! You really have made my day and I will be ****ing myself with laughter all evening over this. Thank you very much. There is a term you use for this behavior. Starts with F :-) Nice one! |

That is the cyclist's right to the road, they are surrounded by a special smug zone which no person or vehicle may intrude upon. |
