I thought he was drunk, that isn't even mentioned!

Kill a cyclist and get fined the equivelent of a tailor-made suit,
brilliant.

ISTM the problem was the charge rather than the sentence. How could
that possibly not have been causing death by dangerous driving?

The Criminal Protection Service prefers to bring cases where there'll be
less fight...

I believe the driver claimed to be "too shocked" to remember what
happened, and therefore did not even say anything about it in court.

He didn't look too shocked to me when I saw him.

The more I think about this, the more it makes my blood boil.
You are entitled to a jury of your peers (OK - I know most cases are not
heard by jury), and you are innicent until proven guilty.
But it you don't want to answer questions about your conduct in court,
you lie and say you can't remember.

Witnesses said he'd been drinking, but as he would have been
automatically breathalysed by the police, he must have been under the
limit, i.e. not drunk.

He also had to be restrained from doing a runner, by all accounts.

They are actually the government prosecution service. Their wages
are paid by government and they do their paymasters' bidding.
