To save me the agony of reading your word salad, could you please provide a VERY short summary of whatever point you were trying to make? I wasn't trying to make my point, I made it. I tried removing all the historical references for both UK and USA and was left with nothing of interest or value. I'm sure there's something that might be interesting hidden under all those impressive sounding words. What Andrew wants was never on offer and there is no reason it should be on offer now. The US president who came nearest to the conservative ideal in word (few) and deed (nothing except the essential) was Calvin Coolidge. Whether my cross-Atlantic analysis has value depends on your grip on the history I skimmed. Also, forgive me if I don't reply for a few days. The US government recently sent out $1,400 stimulus checks to most taxpayers. It then gave us an extra month to file our tax returns, presumably so we would give some or all of the $1,400 back to the government. I'm now furiously preparing my taxes two weeks before the deadline. I receive Pfizer vaccination #2 on Saturday and do not want to attempt any creative deductions or calculations while suffering from the side effects. No need to reply. I already posted everything I want to say on the subject. I'm much more interested in your reaction to the second Pfizer vaccination, as I'm booked in for my second shot. For me, the second dose felt like I got hit by a [small] truck during the the first 24 hours -- I was dragged out, and all my pre-existing aches and pains were turned up two or three notches. No nausea. The second 24 hours were just tiredness like really bad jet lag, and then that was over, and I was back to being my usual level of old and infirm. -- Jay Beattie. Andre Jute Thanks for your concern and interest. I'll issue a press release if things go awry. The reason I'm worried is that four friends and acquaintances have had some rather nasty reactions to the 2nd Pfizer shot. Two started having general fatigue a few days after the shot. The fatigue went away after about three days for one friend, but is still dragging on after 5 weeks. My neighbor started experiencing Parkinson's like tremors in her legs almost immediately. It's been 10 weeks and the tremors show no signs of going away. The doctors don't have a clue. The fourth is experiencing a mix of fatigue, fever, sore muscles, and erratic heartbeat. At about 2 weeks, it started going away, but at 8 weeks, some of the symptoms are still there. Everyone else I know had some kind of mild reaction starting about 2 days after shot #2, and ending about 5 days later. What those who had adverse reactions have in common is the existence of one or more underlying medical conditions. I fit nicely into that category, which is why I'm concerned. This might be of interest: "Vaccine side-effects and SARS-CoV-2 infection after vaccination in users of the COVID Symptom Study app in the UK" (Apr 27, 2021): https://www.thelancet.com/journals/laninf/article/PIIS1473-3099(21)00224-3/fulltext#seccestitle130 "Among vaccinated app users, 159,101 (25.4%) of 627,383 indicated having one or more systemic adverse effect, and 257,209 (66.2%) of 388,430 reported one or more local adverse effect". Note that the reporting population is self-selected and therefore subject to considerable bias. Good luck and hopefully we will all survive in grand style. Since I knew that this was not a dangerous disease I didn't get any vaccination and hence didn't have any vaccination related illnesses. Instead I simply got the illness which was nothing more than being tired for a couple of days. My bad. |

Covid-19 is caused by the SARS-Cov-2 virus which is an influenza virus. If a vaccine misses the mark this year the same number and type of people die from the flu virus. People that are in good health have very little other than discomfort to fear from corona viruses. I understand, Tom. I've also long since grasped that many people who were due to die anyway from statistical mortality but are classified as COVID-19 victims should have their co-mortalities spelt out. But in the end I'm an artist who's beaten the L tables but with much still to say, and in my professional specialties, in psychology as a mass motivator and in economics as a demographer, I'm a statistician with more style than the purely mathematical technicians, that is to say, an odds-player. So I take the vaccination when it is offered because I have several strikes against me, age and being immune-compromised being the most serious, on the calculation that the vaccinations can do me less harm than even the small chance of catching the disease. In short, I'm treating COVID-19 like I treat the annual flu. Of course, that's easier for me than for most people because, pandemic or not, I live like a troglodyte anyway, not going out except to cycle and even then mostly at night, and not encouraging Visitors from Porlock. I've hardly noticed that there is a pandemic on, and that we're supposed to stay inside, because that is what I do anyway. The pandemic was several months old before I discovered, on telling my wife to make a restaurant booking, that the restaurants were closed. Andre Jute Best-informed frog you'll ever meet |

Since I'm never run over by my own Utopia Kranich, I don't know what the head tube badge looks like either. All I remember faintly from unpacking the bike a dozen years ago is that the pair of late-hippies behind Utopia are such convinced environmentalists that their label is easily damaged paper -- and it could be that I remember wrong; they also have an option to deliver the bike label-less. As my bike is always clean -- I wipe the dust off it every two years or so -- and as I have deliberately developed it as a near-zero service bike (for instance, I run the chain for its entire life on the factory lube inside a Hebie Chainglider) I have no occasion to inspect any part of it. I'm not being snippy: in Ireland even the farm lanes I ride are tarmac, and the daily dose of rain keeps them clean, so it takes a looooong time for my bike to develop a visible sheen of dust. I had the virus early so I never considered the vaccine. YMMV. I've left instructions about which of my nut-cutter lawyers should lead. No point in wasting a good fatality. "Der 'GreÂ*at Reset'-Schwab mischt konfuse MusÂ*soÂ*liÂ*ni mit Mabuse." Heh-Heh! You're a wicked man, Sepp Ruf. I knew Otto Skorzeny, who was Hitler's fave parachute commando and was thus sent to rescue Mussolini the first time the Communist partisans imprisoned him (the second time they took heed of the lesson and just hung him and his mistress too for good measure). Even among the Nazis I knew during my two political exiles in South America, Skorzeny was an outstanding asshole. With both my arms and both my legs in plaster after a motor racing incident, I flew several hundred miles in a small plane to make a scheduled meeting with him -- and before I was back at the office again, he complained to my chairman that "your impertinent genius carried his jacket over his shoulder [that was the way my arm was plastered immovably!] and his tie was not pulled up." There wasn't a single vote around our boardroom table to retain him as a client and apparently he was so insensitive, he didn't connect the two events, asking my chairman plaintively, "But why can't I be your client? I pay my bills on time." AJ |

All the Democrats that I speak to more or less acknowledge that Biden stole the election from Trump, but maintain that it was justified because Trump was so terrible.
My favorite George Carlin routine is the one where he says, approximately: "Everybody claims to have RIGHTS! YOU have RIGHTS, I have RIGHTS, THEY ALL have RIGHTS! It's nothing but a cute but fictional sentiment because the government can take away your rights any time it wants." I never took his admonition seriously until I actually had some intensive dealings with the federal government, and then discovered to my chagrin that he is completely correct. |
