Default ERD tool for bike shops - what do you pros think

I was at the bike shop inquiring as to how to figure out what I need to
build a wheel. I had said something about the wear mark is almost worn away.
The mechanic said something about effective rim diameter. He said there are
no more rims like I have so I would have to get a different brand, and the
rim diameter will be different on various brands of rims. I was asking how
to build it around my tiagra hub, and I guess I was trying to see if I could
use the spokes already on the wheel.
Any suggestions, since you've done it. And I was browsing what erd is and
this video popped up on youtube for an erd tool.

I use two cut-off spokes with nipples screwed-on with locktite. Insert
the spokes into holes opposite each other. Measure the amount of overlap
(or distance between the ends if they do not overlap) and subtract (or
add) from the combined length of the spokes. Cheap, easy, has worked for
me for years. I think I read about this on the web somewhere. Cannot
recall where.

About 1/2 way down this page
http://www.ypedal.com/wheelbuilding/wheelbuilding.htm they describe
the process I use. There are other sites that describe the same basic
procedure as well. Cheers!
