Default Hybrids

What do you think of first when you see this word?

The "Hybrids" we sell today are upright riding comfort bikes with tires from
700x35 to 45.

When they were first introduced, they were road bikes with slightly larger
tires and mountain bike bars and drivetrains.

Recently a sub-class has returned to the original notion, albeit with road
bike drivetrains (like Giant's Cypress SX or Specialized's Sirrus.)

My "Hybrid" has a high-geared XT drivetrain and really fat 700x45 tires
(they look more like 700x50.) In reality, it's closer to a 29 inch bike
with slick tires.

"it's closer to a 29 inch bike"
Ya had to say it didn't you. :-)
The image I get when someone says "hybrid" is essentially a cyclocross
bike. Drop bars, 700 x 35 knobbies, and canti. brakes. I considered
getting years ago when a lot of the roads NE of Boulder, CO, where I
used to ride, were dirt. Monique can tell you, they've all been paved
with subdivisions now. :-(

I haven't seen a true dirt road around here ... unless you count Teller
Farm, I suppose.

Used to be a lot of them between Longmont and Hwy 36. This was around
1990 though.
