Default Question for Simon Mason

What is the make and model of your alcohol meter? The levels you published
are meaningless without details of how they were measured.

Can someone else ask for me please. I'm in Mason's killfile.

Sounds a reasonable question to me ..

Sorry - Mr Benn wanted me to put him in my killfile, so I don't see
why I should engage with him when it suits him.
He can compare the item in my photos with an alcohol meter search on e-
bay - I am not going to do the donkey work for him.

I also asked you to jump off a cliff.

Your alcohol meter looks like this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-6-LCD-Di...em3a6bb8 a6f5

£9.99 + £1 shipping from Hong Kong.

Do you really expect to get anything remotely accurate at that price?

Thanks Paul.

In the absence of any sense from Mason, I can only conclude that he bought
this (below) for £9.99. Goodness knows what he was expecting.

Looking at his pictures it would appear to be this quality piece of
equipment:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Police...item19c714638d

As you can see by the price and the 'Chinglish' instructions, it's at the
top end of the range and would guarantee top notch accuracy.
Can't think why the police spend thousands on theirs.................

The seller indicates an accuracy of 10% , seems better than assesment
by eye colour to me. How much better could you get for £100?
Anything?

Reliability in the field, not particularly accuracy. It would
surprise me if they were spending much above £1200 for an apparently
similar device. Initial purchase costs may or may not include a
calibration contract. Calibration is not particularly relevant to a
portable device, as long as it's reasonably accurate and doesn't give
spurious readings, it'll be OK and probably protect the police from
claims for false arrest.

I paid £50 for mine - that is a cheapo Chinese copy like my video
glasses were.
I was impressed by its accuracy to be honest - it was very linear and
consistent.

=============================================

SM: "I was impressed by its accuracy"

How do you know how accurate it is?

SM: "it was very linear"

How would you know it is linear? Did you mean monotonic?

SM: "and consistent"

Consistently inaccurate.

How can you tell how accurate it is unless you have a reference standard to
test it against? You don't have a reference standard and I presume the
manufacturer (who I asked you about but you refused to answer) doesn't have
any calibration certification.

Either £10 or £50 or £100 will not buy you an accurate alcohol meter. You
have just bought a box of rubbish again. And you claim to work in a Lab!
There are some things about measurements you need to learn about.
Measurements are only as good as the equipment being used and the person
performing them.

And I can assure you that your "expensive" £50 meter was also made in China.
