Walking helmets
Not Malcolm Wardlaw's spoof or the one from Copehagenize
(http://www.copenhagenize.com/2009/08/walking-helmet-is-good-helmet.html, which seems to have fooled several people). This one appears to be real. http://www.wear-a-helmet.com/ I have a friend who does charity work in Vietnam; I think his view would be that they might be better off devoting their efforts to removing the remaining landmines. wrote: This one appears to be real. http://www.wear-a-helmet.com/ It does indeed, although it's somewhat self-contradictory and certainly confused. Their 'stats' page appears to be quoting global figures, with no differentiation between different road users. And the main of it seems to be aimed at motorcyclists. I have a friend who does charity work in Vietnam; I think his view would be that they might be better off devoting their efforts to removing the remaining landmines. Or just learning to drive. But seriously, if they were simply targetting moped and motorbike riders it might make a bit more sense. |

Guy You area pathetic fool Chapman. Only one as despicable as you would try and make such a cheap jibe. I actually doubt if you have any friends - never mind about one doing charity work in Vietnam. -- Guy Chapman nym-shifted to Lou Knee in order to call someone a ****. He was caught out by the evidence of the IP address he used. He has "implied" that it was not himself - but refuses to answer the simple question: "Guy Chapman: Did you make the Lou Knee post?" He is despicable - on this evidence you should not believe *anything* he says. |

The campaign is aimed at persuading motorcyclists in Vietnam to wear helmets. 95% of road accidents involve motorcycles. I certainly wouldn't be mocking such a campaign. |

What is wrong with people? From the same page: "get down on your hands and knees and have a wander around. Look at all the furniture, hard surfaces and sharp edges you would hit if you fell on them - both inside your home and outside in your garden." But no advice about moving things or fitting corner protectors or safety glass or safety film ( something a registered childminder has to do). Yerst, me suspects nowt to do with thinking of children but going for the knee-jerk 'cough up or your child will DIE' And what, exactly, are these DoTI (well named it seems in this case) figures referring to? How many are the usual "It's normal for young children to sustain bumps and bruises occasionally as part of exploring." (Thudguard). Will they continue to support the same children through to the end of thier lives, ensuring that as they get older they buy helmets to protect them every single day? If so, Darwin gives us a little reminder about how those unable to adapt tend to die out. A few generations of Thudguardians and they will not be able to survive without protective head gear while the rest of us brought up normally will manage to survive the inadvertant (hopefully) Frisbee to the head. I am so please there is no such thing as 'common sense' or the human race wouldn't have got as far as it has before wiping itself out. -- Come to Dave & Boris - your cycle security experts. |

Mr. Benn wrote (quoted by KeithT):
"Over 318,575 baby & toddler head injuries are recorded each year!"(Department of Trade & Industry). Again, common sense being ridiculed. What is wrong with people? OK, let's try some common sense. Whichever way you cut this figure, it means (if true) that 1 in 3 of us would have a recorded head injury in infancy. It turns out that about half a percent of us don't make it to 1 year old, and another .1% (i.e. 1 in a thousand) don't make it to 5. But of those who die under 1, about 2/3 die within 28 days of birth, long before they can even turn over, let alone move around. So. Deaths from all causes between 28 days and 5 years are around a thousand times fewer than the number of these recorded injuries. The only possible conclusion is that the infant skull is fully capable of dealing with the knocks and bumps it's subjected to. Any attempt to protect it is just likely to undermine the basic lesson all people learn eventually - hitting your head hurts, so don't do it. If you work it out, the human reaction time is shorter than the time taken to move 6 feet at 12mph. So in any crash a cycle helmet might help with, you have time to protect your head and hit some other part of yourself. Colin McKenzie -- No-one has ever proved that cycle helmets make cycling any safer at the population level, and anyway cycling is about as safe per mile as walking.
