A clear need for walking helmets
QUOTE:
"A woman suffered head injuries after she got off a bus in Abingdon and was hit by a cyclist. Oxford Bus Company spokesman Phil Ashworth said the incident happened in The Vineyard at about 8.30am, causing delays to its services of about 30 minutes. Mr Ashworth said the woman got off the Abingdon-bound bus and was then hit by the cyclist. He added: "The woman got off the bus in The Vineyard and was hit by the cyclist who was on the pavement. "She was taken to hospital for treatment." South Central Ambulance spokesman David Gallagher said: "The woman was hit by a bike at speed and was bleeding from the head. "She was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital for treatment to the head injuries." http://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/you...in_Abi ngdon/ |

"The woman got off the bus in The Vineyard and was hit by the cyclist who was on the pavement". The Vineyard is a thoroughfare in Abingdon: ,18z?hl=en It seems to be an ordinary street in a very built-up area. It's a main road (it has an A-number) and though I haven't spotted any bus-stops on Streetview, it's clear from the report that there must be some. No part of The Vineyard appears to have a "shared-use" footway. There are certainly no signs of the sort required for such things. The collision is reported as having taken place on the footway. It does seem that the answer to your first question ("Was it a shared use path?) is "no". As for your second question ("criminal attack constituting ABH/GBH"), the answer, surely, is that only the cyclist properly knows the answer. But simple recklessness and selfish lack of concern for others (on the part of the cyclist) seems instinctively more likely, wouldn't you say? |

There is a cycle shop down there called "Pedal Power", so maybe the cyclist was exercising his right to cross the foootpath at right angles into the shop doorway as drivers do when accessing their drives. :-p https://goo.gl/maps/hhSY1HebiuT2 |

So it seems likely that some idiot was riding a bike illegally (and too fast) on the pavement and chose to ride into this poor woman rather than a wall or the back of a bus. Fortunately it does sound as if she only had a scalp wound, but it seems a strange choice of story if you're trying to make cycling look a safer option than other modes of transport. |
