PC Sample said that if Mr Wood had a front light on his bike it would
probably have provided sufficient illumination to light up the rear
reflector of the pick-up and warn him of its presence.

"Mr Wood was not wearing a crash helmet".
No doubt a 'crash helmet' would have prevented the 'lacerations to his liver and rib fractures'.

A good thing PC Sample said "probably". If it was that dark he would not
have been able to follow the verge.

Not only that, it would have levitated him safely over the vehicle.

No, the Cycle Helmet's magical force field would have gently slowed his pedal cycle to zero mph.
Unless he was travelling at exactly 20mph in which case it would take exactly 37 metres to stop, so sayeth Mr Cheerful.
