Driving too close to a cyclist could land you £100 fine - How far away do you need to be?
QUOTE:
"A new law was introduced earlier this year to protect cyclists on the road in Britain. The rule dictates that drivers must leave a minimum distance away from a cyclist when overtaking or travelling alongside a bicycle or they could face a punishment. UK drivers could be penalised with a £100 fine and three penalty points if caught travelling to close to a bicycle. The recommended distance a driver must leave between the car and cyclist is ***1.5-metres*** (EMPHASIS MINE) and if you’re caught overtaking under this then you could face the punishments." https://www.express.co.uk/life-style...ine-overtaking |

Bear in mind this is wheel to wheel, not mirror to elbow. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/content/...g?imwidth=1240 How will it be enforced? |

When the rider is passing something that has height above the road (a pedestrian, particularly), cyclist often has to move into the road to make a gap at elbow height |

A police officer's opinion? Or maybe camera evidence? |

It's just a 'crackdown' on existing law, and also seems to be codifying it to 1.5 meters. It will come to naught. |

Probably, seeing as though there was also supposed to be a big crackdown on middle lane hoggers, but at least the overtaking cyclists too close has had a few successes. QUOTE: “We want to remind drivers to allow a safe passing distance of 1.5 metres when overtaking. I think that today has been a stark reminder to these drivers of the risks involved.” If drivers did not want to be “educated”, they faced a £100 fine and three points on their licence or up to a £5,000 fine and potential disqualification if prosecuted at court for careless driving."
