Unfortunately I witnessed the aftermath of this - and it was horrific. The driver of the tip-up truck was arrested for dangerous driving. The bike was well mangled.
It happened in the middle of the road complex well outside any blue bike lane.
However there is an issue which has yet to be remarked upon by the press.
When I sadly walked away from the scene I saw another heavy duty lorry - a cement mixer - being driven by a young guy I guess in his twenties. He was obviously NOT aware of his total surroundings due to having those ubiquitous ear-buds plugged into his head from an iPod / MP3 player (or whatever).
It is this aspect which to my mind is one of the problems with heavy lorries being driven without due care and attention by young and older drivers. These drivers are listening to stuff on their iPads / MP3 players whilst driving the lorries in heavy traffic and are not fully aware of what is going on around them.
What bit of what law forbids lorry-drivers - or cyclists, for that
matter - to listen (whether over speakers or a headset) to loud music
whilst driving?
