Default Traffic 'bedlam' leaves drivers unable to escape St Stephen's Tesco

Thicko drivers blaming cyclists for being stuck in a car park!
QUOTE:
Angry drivers were left stuck inside St Stephen's Tesco car park this rush hour.

Motorists blamed the new cycle lanes installed in the city centre for the "bedlam" on Friday.

But Hull City Council said the disruption was in fact caused by "a crash at the Ferensway/Anlaby Road junction, increased traffic (normal before the start of the bank holiday) and heavy rain". (WHAT A SURPRISE!) - SM

One frustrated motorist on Hull Traffic and Travel Facebook page said: "Seems the new traffic system around town has now caused halts in St Stephens car park.

"Been trying to leave my spot for 30 minutes. Let’s hope we all don’t get fined for not leaving immediately after paying our tickets."

Another commented: "It's bloody bedlam".

Meanwhile, another advised others to avoid the car park due to "gridlock" and said that she was stuck there for more than 45 minutes.

"It’s probably because everywhere now is only one lane because of all the cycle lanes they’ve put everywhere," she said.

"Everyone in there was getting annoyed honking their horns because people weren't letting them out of their parking spaces." (WHAT'S THAT GOING TO DO?) - SM

Others worried that the traffic would worsen when schools go back.

"Beverley Road traffic was backed up down Cottingham Road to Chants traffic lights at 3pm and schools aren’t back yet," said one.

Pop-up cycle lanes are being created across the city, a newly segregated route between Witham and the Beverley Road-Ferensway junction will be for cyclists only, with bollards stretching from the corner of Charles Street along Freetown Way.

The work is part of a £2.5m council project to create a continuous cycle network across Hull city centre.

The network will eventually cover Freetown Way, as well as commuter routes into Hull on Anlaby Road, Beverley Road, Holderness Road and Spring Bank.

Speaking previously, Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for economic investment, regeneration and planning, said: “We want cyclists to feel safe when they use our roads.

"This is why we are installing segregated cycle lanes and increasing the road space for them.”

The work is being fast-tracked in line with funding allocated by the Department for Transport (DfT) emergency active travel grant.

The works are expected to finish on Friday, September 4.
