MP wants cyclists banned-Morn. Pen.
From AUDAX dicussion list:
MP wants cyclists banned by Matt Doran Mornington Peninsula Leader, May 25, 2004 Cyclists could be permanently banned from a windy stretch of the Esplanade from Mt Martha to Safety Beach. Mornington Liberal MP Robin Cooper has asked the State Government to urgently consider banning cyclists from Dominion Rd, Mt Martha, to Tassells Creek, Safety Beach, in the interests of public safety. Mr Cooper said the stretch of road was extremely dangerous and there had been a number of near-collisions when motorists tried to overtake riders. "It is a very narrow road with a single lane each way, and large groups of riders can cause diabolical problems for motorists and place themselves at risk," he said. "Banning bike riders will be safer for both motorists and the cyclists themselves." Senior-Sergeant Neal Aubert, of Mornignton police, said he would send a letter to the Peninsula Safety Committee identifying the dangerous safety situation on the Esplanade. "Many drivers have to cross double white lines to pass the riders, which is an offence that carries a $165 fine and three demerit points," Sen-Sgt Aubert said. Mornington Peninsula Council road safety officer Robin Tiffany agreed the stetch of road was narrow and dangerous, but said banning cyclists was not the solution. "An education campaign could be run to make sure riders stay in single file, and that motorists don't break the law out of frustration," he said. "There are some sections of that road where it is safe to overtake a cyclist." Adam Pyke, president of the Mornington Cycling Club, said banning cyclists was a dramatic move and the real problem was speeding motorists. "Bike riders have been enjoying this very visual part of the peninsula since the year dot. A ban would force cyclists on to Nepean Highway, which has higher speed limits and is even more dangerous for riders." A spokesman for the Peninsula Peddlers, which has been the biggest recreational cycling group on the peninsula since 1989, said it was "totally wrong" to discriminate against cyclists. He said a better solution would be to install a bike trail or lower the speed limit. Mornington police said any ban on cyclists could be enforced by penalty fines and installing advisory signs. STATISTICS Between 1988 and 2003, there were four bicycle crashes on the stretch of the Esplanade between Dominion Rd, Mt Martha, and Tassells Creek, Safety Beach, resulting in serious injuries. There were no fatalities. Between 1989 and 2003, there were 46 serious-injury bicycle crashes in the Mornington Peninsula. There were no fatalities. In the same period, there were 36 fatalities resulting from motor vehicle crashes in the peninsula and a further 545 crashes resulting in serious injuries. |

MP wants cyclists banned by Matt Doran I would like politicians banned. Mr Cooper said the stretch of road was extremely dangerous and there had been a number of near-collisions when motorists tried to overtake riders. Who's at fault there? "Many drivers have to cross double white lines to pass the riders, which is an offence that carries a $165 fine and three demerit points," Sen-Sgt Aubert said. Then they shouldn't do it. Theo |

I'm not in Victoria but I sure as hell hope you guys mount a strong defence to these ignorant car loving, biased twits. There needs to be some education there, and it isn't for cyclists. Good luck and keep us posted. regards Andrew http://www.geocities.com/andrewhooke...leTouring.html |

I like how the drivers 'have to cross double white lines". Why is this?

Greetings,
My response is that the Minister in question can **** off. I've ridden that bit of road many times and don't particularly like it, but it is a public road and I have a right to ride on in if I want to. I certainly prefer it to Moorooduc Rd, which is awful. How about design the frigging road properly in the first place so both cars and bicycles can use it? Too obvious, isn't it? Regards, Ray. rickster wrote: From AUDAX dicussion list: MP wants cyclists banned by Matt Doran Mornington Peninsula Leader, May 25, 2004 Cyclists could be permanently banned from a windy stretch of the Esplanade from Mt Martha to Safety Beach. I wonder how much havoc it would cause for cages when "their" road is overtaken by cyclists during the around the bay in a day event? But I suppose it doesn't matter, since the minister in question has never been on a bike, and never likely to either. -- Linux Registered User # 302622 http://counter.li.org |
