Cable stuck in shifters
The ends of the derailleur cables are stuck into my bar end shifters.
I sprayed some penetrating oil on them and unsuccessfully tried twisting the cables to free them. Suggestions? |

Suggestions? try to loop some fishing line or dental floss around the nub-end of the cable that is stuck in your shifter, you might be able to pull it out that way- but but but, you have pulled the cable housing off the cable right ? |

Are the cables broken off? If not, or if there's enough broken cable remaining, you could try using vise grips to grab the cable with close to the lever. Then tap the vise grips lightly to push the cable end out. If there's not enough cable remaining to grab, I'd take a sharp thin punch (actually, I might use a scribe, nail or thick needle) to try tapping the cable end out. If necessary, you could try carefully drilling out the cable end. Warming the lever might help too. -- - Frank Krygowski |

you know PC Blaster ? Walmart. apply a 3-4 drops, spray a screwdirve rend, outside and down wind...bike outside the stuff stinks/toxic...don't spray eberything directly...the can pressuer is a joke by the factoryfor selling more Blaster.Blaster dissovles the crud, seperates the metal parts.Finish Line does this but as prevent maint.
then let it sit. add a drop or two more then wiggle the cable maybe with vice grips. Lowes was selling min VG's for a buck....handy. when yawl doahn use a preventiuve maintenance lube like Finish Line Wax with Teflon at reg intervals say 4-5 years in a hospitalble environment like Sumatra, original greases absolve or evap forming a hard residue and or rust.. The rust is metal plus oxygen and water. More molecules than designed for and no room for extraction movement. jiggle jiggle doahnah force it'll come out. IHS |

I'm assuming the cast zinc end of the cable is somehow stuck in its socket. On the bar end shifters I know, one doesn't have to take anything apart to access that. I admit, I've never seen this problem, but I suppose enough corrosion or crud might cause it. -- - Frank Krygowski |
