More quick links
After my previous post on the subject I did a bit of research and I found both SRAM and KMC make two different versions of the "Quick Link", or "Power Link" as SRAM has it. Both companies make both re-usable and non re-usable links but apparently only non re-usable links are made for 11 speed chains. For the wider chains both companies make both types of links. I tried both the KMC and SRAM non re-usable link. The KMC requires moderate pressure to seat the links while the SRAM required considerable force. Opening the KMC required minimal force and the SRAM a large amount. Visual examination of the used links show definite deformation of the SRAM in the area where the pin is forced through the narrow part of the keyhole shaped orifice in the other link. The KMC showed little or no deformation. The SRAM links seem to be intended as essentially a permanent joining while the KMC links, even the non re-usable version, seems more likely to be a link that is can be installed and uninstalled with moderate effort. Perhaps the SRAM is the better choice for those that install a chain and only remove it when it wears out, or breaks, while the KMC might be a better choice if one occasionally remove the chain and does not have a re-usable link. -- cheers, John B. |
