Default Don't bike in Israel

Two bicyclists died yesterday in separate incidents. In the morning, a
70-year-old rider collapsed during an off-road ride near Moshav Odem
in the northern Golan Heights. Magen David Adom paramedics declared
him dead at the scene. Meanwhile, a 58-year-old collapsed cycling near
Naveh Shalom and was also declared dead at the scene. (Eli Ashkenazi)

Already israeii champion Golan SHalmon was killed by an errant driver,
even though
he had a follow vehicle: http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/pages/S...?itemNo=624351
Apparently, it is illegal to cycle for fitness on open roads in
Israel. A policeman forced Leah Goldstein to
get off her bike while she was on a training ride, which is probably a
good thing, given
these incidents. More generally, israeli road safety is terrible. The
number of Israeli civilians
killed in the Lebanon war last year was on the same order as
pedestrians killed by cars
each month.

An Israeli mathematician (named Vardi - do you have a
brother?) once told me the old joke:

"What is the shortest measurable quantum of time?"

"The time between when an Israeli traffic light turns
green and the guy behind you starts honking his horn."

I've subsequently been told that he was wrong because
the time is measurably negative.

This is because they have those lights that go red/yellow at the same
time
before they go green. Everyone is expected to start moving at that
point
(or so it seems judging by the honking.....).

I heard that joke on Johnny Carson about 25 years ago.
