RIP Sheldon Brown
Farewell, Sheldon, and thanks.
The wheels he helped build, the bikes he gave new lives to and the lives he changed will continue to sing the greatness of this soul. Good bye for now Sheldon Your humor will be missed. |

I'm sorry to say that Sheldon Brown died last night. The Harris Cyclery website has been updated to reflect the news. (http:// sheldonbrown.com/harris/). Farewell, Sheldon, and thanks. I'd like to add my voice to the tributes being made to this great man, who has joined Fred DeLong (whose bicycle mechanical advice I also sought out, but decades ago). Rather eerily after absorbing the sad news, I worked back recent RBT threads I'd taken an interest in for unread posts, and was confronted by what appears to be Sheldon's last posting, dated "Sun, 3 Feb 2008 20:42:48 -0800 (PST)" answering Andre Jute in the thread "Hub Gears: no need to scoffjaw the warranty". He'll be missed so very much. Kerry |

Farewell, Sheldon, and thanks. JLS Oh Captain! My Captain! O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done, The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won, The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring; But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead. O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells; Rise up--for you the flag is flung for you the bugle trills, For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths for you the shores a-crowding, For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; Here Captain! dear father! This arm beneath your head! It is some dream that on the deck, You've fallen cold and dead. My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still; My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will; The ship is anchored safe and sound, its voyage closed and done; From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won; Exult O shores, and ring O bells! But I, with mournful tread, Walk the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead. -- Walt Whitman A nice tribute I thought. |

JLS A friend wrote back that today he went on a ride in the mud and sunshine so Sheldon could see it through his eyes... and so I wonder... when I ride will I pass on a memory to Sheldon... will I ride with the memory of his joy of cycling. Of one I am certain. Thank you Sheldon for the joy, the passion, and goodwill! |

... I'm sorry to say that Sheldon Brown died last night. The Harris Cyclery website has been updated to reflect the news. (http:// sheldonbrown.com/harris/). Farewell, Sheldon, and thanks. JLS I was stunned when I found out about Sheldon Brown's passing. I never knew him personally but we communicated via email a few times. I always enjoyed looking through his website. It was an entertaining and educational experience. In one message he turned me on to his treatise on slavery and the American Civil War: http://sheldonbrown.net/slaverywar.html After reading this article I came away with a new historical perspective plus an appreciation for the humanitarian side of Sheldon Brown. He lived a full and interesting life marching to the beat of a different drummer. Hopefully his website will continue as a memorial to Sheldon.... Chas. |

JLS I was saddened when I read the news last night that Sheldon had passed away. I think the measure of the man is that everyone of us felt he was a close personal friend and indeed he was. When it came to practical issues like which canti's would work when converting a Univega Gran Turisimo to 700c wheels, Sheldon was the man... But that was just the smallest part of Sheldon. Anybody got a Real Man Saddle? It's gonna be hard ridin' here for a while with Sheldon gone. Jon Isaacs |

What a loss! I am nervous about losing all his data so I downloaded
this tool that will save all parts of a web site. I have used it before and it is very good and free, gets all the pages not just the one your're viewing. I am saving it all today http://www.httrack.com/page/2/en/index.html |
