retrofitting an older bike
Have an old Rockhopper that still has friction shifters and derailleurs, along with a 6 spd
cluster. I believe, because of the rear droput spacing, that 6 is the limit for the cluster, but I'd like to upgrade to indexed shifting. Any ideas about the way to go and costs involved would be appreciated. I can do my own work, so there's no need to involve a local shop in this except for purchasing the components. Bob |

Six chain, six freewheel, right side SIS-6 shifter, SIS compatible rear changer and compatible gear wire/casing all for about $70. These are all current parts and not expensive. -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org/ Open every day since 1 April, 1971 |

If it's a cassette where the small cog screws on then it's an orphan and extremely hard to get sprockets for. If it's a freewheel you should be able to get a 6 speed index one although a 7 speed one will probably fit both the hub and the current frame spacing. If there is a bicycle Co-op near you they are usually a great source for 6 and 7 speed index shifters. Cheers |

Bob It's trivial to spread the rear triangle a little if you want to get a new rear wheel and upgrade to 8 speeds. 8 speed shifters are cheap. Your existing derailer would probably work fine. -- Android Usenet Reader http://android.newsgroupstats.hk |
