Default Cyclist killed racing train in Des Plaines, Ill.

A 19-year-old bicyclist was killed Monday, April 18, 2005, when he was
hit by a Metra train in Des Plaines, Illinois.

About 6:50 p.m., three bicyclists were racing the train to the North
Central Service Route crossing. Two of the cyclists made it across the
tracks, but the third was hit by the train, Metra spokesman Tom Miller
said. The man who died is Ephrain Trejo-Patino of Des Plaines, WGN-TV
reported.

The train was delayed about an hour and a half, then went on toward its
destination in Antioch, Illinois, Miller said.

IIRC, two of them made it around the crossing gates. In this race, the third
place finisher became the Darwin award winner.

Very sad; makes me wonder about racing. Why?

I race time or myself, but never other people or machines- especially
infernal combustion engines- but racing a train???

Trains are an excellent answer for mass transit instead of clogged
roadways, but sad occurances like this put a make bikes and trains
appear to be a dangerous and reckless way to get around.
