It's the same down here, particularly when you carry panniers ("bags"
to the lay people). Actually I'm so pro about it that I don't know if
I look like a VIP hobo or eccentric millionaire. I like to consider
myself an ECCENTRIC PENNYLESS, but some people fail to get the
distinction between that an hobo, or between that and a millionaire.

I have even made a t-shirt that announces that in bold letters, so
there's no confusion.

Pretty soon gas will be a lot more expensive that people will think
that those of us who have been riding bikes are, the opposite of
"hobos", totally wealthy folks...

pointing out that in one major West-coast city, the majority of
bike riders were people who could not afford public
transportation.

Agreed. It is time to make those who fly pay the true cost of airports
and air traffic control, not to mention the environmental externalities.
Similarly, fuel taxes should be raised to pay for "energy security" [1]
and environmental effects of motorized vehicles.

Time to stop these USians from freeloading on the backs of the common
taxpayer.

[1] I.e., bases and military forces in foreign hydrocarbon extraction
areas, including the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.

I agree. ISTM that all forms of travel off your own property are
subsidized to one extent or another, except perhaps trespassing off-
road on foot or on mountain bike.

After motorists and airline passengers pay full costs, and after
trucking companies pay full costs (and pass those on to retailers), we
can talk about what public transportation's worth.
