The gentleman in question surely has the right to go about his
business in peace and without molestation by a gang of teenagers?

I suspect that the sentence "If the cyclist had more than two brain
cells he would have got the hell out of Dodge" contains more than a
kernel of truth.
But being ESN or autistic is not to be deserving of assault.

Perhaps vehicle users should be given some sort of test/licencing
before
being allowed out on their vehicles, that might weed out some of those
mentally unsuitable applicants.

The story shouts out that the cyclist is a harmless person, maybe not
quite the full shilling, who was going about his own business and
harming no-one when he was confronted by a gang of yobs (unfortunately,
not an unusual thing to happen in 2017 Britain).

He reacted in a certain way (perhaps even a little over-influenced by
what he knew of militant chav-cyclists and their antics as reported and
depicted on YouTube, etc) because he was frightened (as most people
might be in such a situation).

Nothing the victim did justified the confrontation in the first place,
let alone the cowardly attack by the ten-strong gang with the grievous
bodily harm they inflicted on him.

What makes you think they would not do the same to a pedestrian in
sinilar circumstances?

Or to a driver who'd just locked up his car?

I think that many people would react violently if someone threw their
bicycle at them.

Or if they were first the object of an assault.

Unfortunately there is only one side of the story, the div. on a bike
may have been swearing at them in the first place, prompting the whole
sorry tale, there may well be previous incidents. I have seen mentally
disabled people get very aggressive and loud, in fact right out of their
prams, over imagined or minor slights or incidents.

That would not be a good reason for a mob of thugs to assauklt oir
threaten him.

He may not have acted after the wisest. But perhaps he was working
within his personal limitations (which are vaguely hinted at in the
report). Many people might panic when faced with a gang of ten yobs.

The more obvious point is that the gang of yobs had no business
confronting him and assaulting* him in the first place.

another person to apprehend immediate and personal violence. He must
have been terrified.]


Then surely he would have ridden away on his viable transport? Not
stopped and started mouthing off and throwing his best means of escape

Maybe, maybe not. It doesn't give the yobs the right to attempt to
murder him. Or to assault / injure him in any way.
