Default Driver jailed after hitting cyclist

Eight months in the choker and a three year ban will make him think twice
about driving like an idiot.
That is if he can get any insurance and passes his test again.

Unless this guy is incredibly stupid he would have learnt his lesson.
The problem is the number of drivers who drive around like knobs who
have not learnt this lesson because they have not yet killed or
seriously injured someone.

Lower speed limits, higher insurance costs and tougher driving tests all
help to curb driver behaviour and keep these types of drivers off the
road. I am not sure that custodial sentences are really that much of a
deterrent because people who drive like this don’t actually realise the
danger they are to other people, they are too thick to realise it, until
it happens to them.

But you need to consider the law of unintended consequences.

Sky-high insurance prices *dont* price these people off the roads. It
just makes them drive un-insured.

Of course, with the new proposed laws he could have got a maximum of 5
years in jail if they had been in place.
