Default Bristol pay-as-you-go bike pilot scrapped

Oh dear - I wonder if Boris's scheme will go the same way?

I wonder if the newcomers to cycling in a city found it too dangerous?

--
Many cyclists are proving the need for registration by their contempt for the Highway Code and laws.

The answer:
All cyclists over 16 to take compulsory test, have compulsory insurance, and be registered.
Registration number to be clearly visible on the back of mandatory hi-viz vest.
Habitual law breakers' cycles confiscated and crushed.
(With thanks to KeithT for the idea)

I wonder if the rents were too high, or the
funding ran out?

I'd guess more like inconvenience .. only 9 bikes in a whole city and
based at the university doesn't seem a lot to go round.

It would appear that unless you lived or worked at the university then
it would be 'awkward' at best to use the scheme. But then, I know
little to nothing of the University or Bristols layout. If the whole
thing were trialled with the full amount of hubs and bikes it might
have worked better and had better response.

It could also, I guess, have bombed even worse ...

Well, if Moody had actually read the article, well I'll help, here's the
relevant bit...

"Hourbike said more funding was needed"

Although, as usual, it works fine in Germany, you find a bike, call a number on
your mobile, it automagically unlocks and off you go. When you finish, you lock
it again, and it's debited to your mobile account.

Do users pay the entire cost, or is there a significant subsidy from people
deriving no benefit from it?

Bristol is a hilly city and not best suited to pushbikes unless you're a
fitness fanatic, in which case you'll already own one; the university is
also at the top of quite a steep hill.

Besides, most places the students are likely to want to go are within
easy walking distance anyway, or they can just hop on a bus.

This seems like a perfect reason to get a bike from the top and leave it at
the bottom. I don't see it working the other way though, so they'll soon run
out of clients. (Very soon with just 10 bikes).

Since using a bike reducing crap in the atmosphere,
everybody *does* benefit from it.

Yes. I know. I was responding to JMS's
implied-assertion-in-the-form-of-a-question
in similar fashion.

That's a very good question. DB run it, so my guess it likely in some part
subsidised since the rail system is, and Germany being a bit more
environmentally conscience tends to subsidise things like this. Next time I'm
in a station I'll try and find out.
