Road deaths down, cyclists deaths up.
Total road deaths in 2010 are below 2000 for the first time since records
began. 16 per cent down on 2009 cyclists are the group that has managed to increase its death toll to 111. More HGV occupants have also been killed, up to 62 from 50. Must be all those new untrained cyclists hitting the pavement (literally) and perhaps all those foreign lorry drivers that are all over the place nowadays. Perhaps the two are related? http://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/2011...w-2-000/39995/ |

It says... "The rise in cyclist casualties is clearly disappointing. As the number of people cycling increases, we must find ways to make the roads safer for them, through a combination of road designs that make cycling safer and better education and training for both motorists and cyclists." Most of the problem is the inequity between cyclists and motorists. The latter can kill the former but the former cannot kill the latter in a collision. Nowhere is this allowed for in law. Where is any education and training for motorists in this respect? We constantly hear about ways cyclists must protect themselves from killer motorists but what must motorists do to avoid killing cyclists? Drivers are already educated and trained. Clearly inadequately because they are killing too many cyclists already. Its called a driving test. Cyclists are an untrained rabble. Is that a sufficient reason to kill them? Most of the problem is the inequity between cyclists and motorists. The latter can kill the former but the former cannot kill the latter in a collision. Nowhere is this allowed for in law. Quite rightly. Its a completely irrelevant argument. Cyclists choose to use an idiotic, non viable, unsuitable vehicle. Which they have every right to do but again is that a sufficient reason to kill them? Where is any education and training for motorists in this respect? Its called a driving test & includes a written & practical exam. And is clearly inadequate. Where is the education & training for cyclists? How can such education and training protect against a speeding car which is out of control? We constantly hear about ways cyclists must protect themselves from killer motorists but what must motorists do to avoid killing cyclists? Ban the scum from the roads - or have them regulated. Why should the majority have to cope with the inadequacy of a tiny minority On humanitarian and human rights grounds. The law needs to be changed to protect both cyclists and pedestrians against killer drivers. Because they are so lethal motorists should always give way to vulnerable cyclists under all circumstances and cyclists need to be free from blame when they are involved in a collision with a driver. Suggestions like lowering speed limits are treated with derision and contempt by motorists and they hate speed cameras and constantly flout the law on speed limits. For which they are regularly apprehended, being traced by their number plates. Cyclists however break the law regularly & get away with it because they are an unregulated rabble. Speeding motorists are not always caught and when they are they are merely given a slap on the wrist despite the serious threat they pose to cyclists.. Is it any wonder that so many cyclists are killed under such unfair circumstances? Its a credit to the training of drivers that the number is so small. You call it small? What about all the injuries as well? Also this is about cyclist deaths being on the increase while motorists grow ever safer in their cars. Now look at that - you have a new ID - and the first reply is from me. I've put forward a reasoned & polite reply - and not insulted you at all - you ****wit. Its hardly reasoned and you couldn't refrain from an insult. You just can't help yourself can you. -- Dave - Cyclists VOR.
