Can anyone tell me why one of the SaxoBank riders is wearing a red jersey.
I looked up red jersey, now defunct as a tour jersey, and Saxobank but can't
find an answer.

Thanks.

Norwegian champion?

AFAIK champions ( national and world) can wear their jerseys in the TdF

Thanks, you were half way there, he is the Swiss national champion. A
couple of days we have been trying to work that out and they are now
interviewing him (Cancellara) on Eurosport.

Or could have been Cancellara who is the Swiss champion.
Depends which stage, I think Cancellara was wearing red yesterday
(Saturday).

It is Cancellara. The other national champion Saxo have along this
year is Andy Schleck (Luxembourg), but since he's in white he isn't
wearing his champion's jersey. Interestingly Cancellara is /not/ the
Swiss time trial champion this year, but he is the road race champion.
Kurt Asle Arvesen, the Norwegian champion, was riding (and was wearing
his mostly-red national champion's jersy) but he retired after
breaking a collarbone in a crash on stage ten.

It would have been interesting to see what Saxo could have done
yesterday if they'd still had both big Jens and Kurt Asle, both of
whom are very powerful riders. But they didn't.

I believe rides are obliged to wear their champions jerseys - teams are also
obliged to permit this.
Additionally if it's (say) a time trial the (say) Ukrainian TT champ should
wear his national TT champ top while the French RRace champshould revert to
his trade team top.

This year's Italian champion (I'm embarrassed to admit I don't
remember who he is) handed back his jersey in protest at his team's
not being invited to the Giro d'Italia; he was subsequently fined and
has had his license suspended for (I think) three months for not
riding in the champions jersey. Some national federations clearly take
this very seriously indeed!

Question for m'learned friends: who was the last British rider to wear
a national champion's jersey in the Tour?

Simpson was a world champion in 65 and would have worn worn the stripes
that year?

Filippo Simeoni, though he was 2008's winner (Pozzato is the current
holder).

That jersey has caused some trouble this year. Pozzato's Italian
champion's jersey was redesigned by his Katusha team, it looked horrible
and the Italian authorities complained about it.
