Derailluer Spring
Anyone know of a way to tighten the spring in the rear derailluer of a
Shimano? The reason I'm asking is that when I bounce over trees or rocks, the chain gets real sloppy and if I'm pedaling... the chain can slip, usually causing me to slow down or come to a stop. Is there something that I'm doing or can do to prevent this from happening? Thanks, Charles |

It requires taking the cage apart so that just the side plate attached to the nuckle remains. Then unscrew the small post that stops the cage and allow the spring to relax. Remove the pivot bolt and carefully remove the side plate. You'll see that there is another hole position for the spring. Move the spring to that position and reassemble. Rotate the side plate to put tension on the spring and replace the stop post (put some blue loctite on its threads). Your in luck... Is there something that I'm doing or can do to prevent this from happening? Depends on what the problem is and how stubborn you are. If it's a new bike from a shop, take it back and tell them your problem. Otherwise wrong chain length seems like one probable cause. If that is OK you might think about how the bike has been used. It's not unheard of to have rust/dust penetrate into the pivot, causing it to jam. Dissasembly, clean and reassembly tends to fix that. Do note that the spring is under some tension which can make reassembly a bit of a challenge. Not having the wheel all the way back can also cause troubles with the RD. In extrreme cases it might be needed to tighten the spring by drilling a new retainer hole. -- dabac |
