Any idea why his bike says USA instead of TREK? I think it has to do with restrictions placed on corporate logos by the IOC. I'm pretty sure the bikes were allowed to have a manufacturers' logo on the downtube only. I haven't seen too many photos of the bikes this time around, but I'm pretty sure in past Olympic road races you'd see logos taped over in order to meet the rules of the IOC. I've read of some bike sponsors providing the riders with Olympic compliant paint schemes with minimal company logos in order to avoid the ugly aesthetic of having swaths of electrical tape covering up logos deemed excessive. |

I'm not sure of the exact regulations, but it may restrict the number and size of the company logos. All of the bikes were way less branded-up than usual, and while most seem to have had their names on the downtubes, there were one or two where even that was absent. Story of his (racing) life: http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos/20...=/photos/2008/ olympics08/1/_DSC8198 Any idea why his bike says USA instead of TREK? Just to expand on my previous note, here's a good photo of the French bikes, and my best guess as to what's happening: http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos/20...p?id=/photos/2 008/olympics08/1/DSCN1165 The Look bikes all say "LOOK" on the downtub, and it looks like the forks as well. Note that the head tube badges have been stripped or covered. That's probably the maximum amount of branding the Olympics allow. Note that Cyril Dessel is riding a not-Look which appears to have no branding at all. He's riding his AG2R BH, and while the graphics from the team bike are preserved, none of the logos seem to be present. Compare to this (large) photo: http://www.ag2rlamondiale-cyclisme.c...7_tdf/2008_07_ TDF_03_Q.jpg I assume Look is a sponsor of the French cycling team, and BH is not. The equipment logos haven't entirely disappeared. There's branding all over stuff like the bars, the wheels, the seats...I don't know if its presence is a case of benign neglect or a 2-component rule. -- Ryan Cousineau http://www.wiredcola.com/ "In other newsgroups, they killfile trolls." Back in my day there were no such restrictions. |

I was looking at it from view of the Chilean/Bolivian guy that had TREK in
all the normal sizes and places and all the huge CERVELO downtube branding. My kids got a kick out of seeing several riders on what appeared to be 100% stock Trek bikes that we sell, including paint jobs. I'd like to get a closer look at Contador's bike though; on the coverage, it looked pretty nice (custom Spain paint job). --Mike Jacoubowsky Chain Reaction Bicycles www.ChainReaction.com Redwood City & Los Altos, CA USA |
