Another cyclist killed
This looks like another classic HGV left hook:
Cyclist waits at red lights. HGV pulls alongside to turn left. HGV driver pulls off forgetting there is a cyclist on his inside and kills the cyclist. When are these killer HGVs going to be made to have side bars fitted? http://www.london-se1.co.uk/news/view/4337 |

I always make sure that if I arrive first I stop in primary position or stay well back from the junction if there is an HGV already there. pk |

I said it 'looks like'. I do not know what happened. I do know that the lorry did not have side bars fitted. http://www.southlondon-today.co.uk/t.../35209MA07.jpg I always make sure that if I arrive first I stop in primary position or stay well back from the junction if there is an HGV already there. Always good advice. I don't know the exact details, so I would not like to blame the victim for poor road positioning. |

Nor could I infer : lorry indiactes to turn left, cyclists pulled up alongside and then gets crushed by turning lorry. Both are just as likely. However you look at it, cycling in London can be quite dangerous. |

However you look at it, cycling in London can be quite dangerous. The very simple fact remains that if cyclists follow the guidance of cycle craft (primary position on approach, do not allow another vehicle to share the same lane, never pass a bus or long vehicle in the same lane near the head of a signal queue) they minimise the chances of a left hook. If anyone is going to trot out a mantra before the facts are known in such cases as this, a reminder of the above would be better that an implied (yes it was there Tom, you know it was) blaming of the driver. pk |

There are insufficient details in that report to make the claim that the lorry driver was at fault. -- Dave - the small piece of 14th century armour used to protect the armpit. |

There are no pavement railings, so it is likely that the victim went under the wheels (being crushed between lorry and railings, another classic HGV left hook method of killing, is not possible). Had the lorry been fitted with £300 side bars it is less likely that the victim would have ended up under the wheels. |

There are insufficient details in that report to make the claim that the lorry driver was at fault. Fortunately for the driver, he is alive and the cyclist is dead. Dead cyclists do not make good witnesses, so it is easy to blame the victim. |
