How pavement motorists can kill people.
Motorists on this cycling newsgroup often argue that pavement motoring
is innocuous and safe compared to pavement cycling but this example shows that even slowly reversing of a car can kill people. It is extremely doubtful that a cyclist could kill someone with a similar manoeuvre. "An elderly woman has died after being hit by her husband's car as he reversed at a golf club, Strathclyde Police have said. The 82-year-old died in the incident at about 1320 BST at Whitecraigs Golf Club, Ayr Road in Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire. She had got out of the car to help her husband with a manoeuvre when she was hit by the vehicle. Her husband, who is also 82, is being treated for shock in hospital. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal." -- . UK Radical Campaigns.(Recently updated). http://www.zing.icom43.net A driving licence is a licence to kill. |

Posters on this NG (all road users) complain about cyclists riding ALONG the pavement for long distances, not about cyclists crossing the pavements to get into their driveway. This incident did not happen on a pavement. If you can not see the difference in a vehicle crossing a pavement to gain access and a vehicle completing all or a great proportion of it's journey on the pavement, then you are even more stupid than I thought (and that is difficult) |

A car backing in or out of a parking spot on a pavement, or backing out of a driveway, can kill a person even at a slow speed, which should be glaringly obvious anyway, even to you. Because cyclists have as much lower momentum they are much less likely to kill on a pavement. -- . It also shows how it could happen on an airport runway, but it didn't happen there. If you can not see the difference in a vehicle crossing a pavement to gain access and a vehicle completing all or a great proportion of it's journey on the pavement, then you are even more stupid than I thought (and that is difficult) You are deliberately avoiding the implications here. And you as usual are ignoring the facts that many cyclist make most or all of their journey on pavements, often with no regard to pedestrians. -- .
