"Idiots" ruining the countryside

part of Beverley And East Riding Golf Course having suffered.

Mr English said: "You see 4x4s and motorbikes tearing up the grass.

"The idiots who do this leave it in a right mess, especially when the
ground is really wet.

One regular Westwood walker, who wished to remain anonymous, wrote in
to the Mail to complain about the problem.

He said: "I'm appalled at the amount of damage being caused to this
beautiful common land. There are vehicle tyre marks in several parts
of the Westwood and particularly on some of the golf course fairways.

"The drivers of the vehicles, whom I can only class as morons, are
doing handbrake turns, which rip up the grass and make the area look
like a race track.

"Driving around on the Westwood, there is a danger their vehicles
could hit something or there could be a dip. Their car could be turned
over or they could hit someone walking along the Westwood.

"Beverley Westwood is a magnificent facility for the public. Let's not
have a mindless few spoil it for the majority."

Police are driving along the Westwood as part of patrols, in a bid to
stop the problem.

PC Chris Matthews, of the local neighbourhood policing team, said: "It
is horrendous that people would do this to a beauty spot. It will turn
areas of the Westwood into a quagmire if it continues.

"People doing this should be warned they could get a £30 fixed penalty
ticket if they are caught. If they get two warnings in 12 months, they
could also have their vehicles seized."

I actually went past that spot yesterday on the way to our walk out at
South Dalton and those idiot drivers have made a right mess of the
pasture land.
They want the book throwing at them.
