I've always had fenders, and I add my own really big mud flaps. The rims probably would have worn out even sooner without them though!

Same here (on my commuter).

It's surprising just how much crap decent fenders with decent spray/mud flaps prevent from getting onto the bike.

I wonder, though, how much dirt and water they keep off ordinary rim brakes which sit below the fender. I've never really watched the water-flow off the inside of fenders. I washed about a pound of crap out of my fenders the other day with all the blow-down from the recent ice-storm/treepocalypse.

Yes, come to think of it I remember the scraping brake sound on wet days
despite my fenders. I suppose stuff flung up into the rear fender does
drip down onto caliper brakes and rims.
