Default Allergies and hard riding

For about a month or a little more I've been having to take Claritin almost every day plus nose spray if I forget and take the Claritin a little late.

I have also been having a real hard time keeping up with anyone. Today I rode with a couple of guys older than me - one 10 years older. It was a flat ride but there were a couple of overpasses. Those guys were absolutely killing me on the overpasses.

Has anyone had any experience with the effects of allergies even when you feel clear? Last year at this time the allergies were gone and I could kill guys under the same conditions.

Yah, I got slaughtered on a ride today due in part to allergies -- and probably drinking too much last night (not a ton -- a couple drinks is enough to make my muscles feel tired). You can cut the pollen with a knife up here.. I also use asthma spray, but I should have bought it with me and taken some hits. Allergies can make you feel tired, and on bad days, they can affect my breathing.

Another issue is that it was hot -- not Arizona hot, but hot for Portland this time of year. 85F. A really beautiful day.

And going back to Frank's "take the lane" threads, we got nasty passes from about every-other PU driver (everybody drives a PU) out in the banjo region of Clackamas County. Narrow, one-lane-each-direction road through farm and forest, and it didn't seem to matter where I rode. If I took the lane, the cowboys would pass with three inches of clearance and play chicken with on-coming traffic. Meanwhile, the compliant drivers would hover and wait to pass even if I were AFRAP. It's all about the motorist. Taking the lane works with compliant drivers but not the homicidal maniacs who seem to populate the hinterlands.

It's certainly true that a certain percentage of motorists are
aggressive and stupid. Some of those act out with "punishment passes."
But in my experience, that's a microscopic percentage of motorists.

And FWIW, that happens when driving too. On a long two lane state
highway today, I had one impatient tailgating idiot pass my car
super-close and almost cut me off, even though there was no oncoming
traffic. I guess he wanted me to go faster, or at least get closer to
the next car ahead.

But it did him no good at all. It merely got him up to the car ahead of
me (which he tailgated too). He followed that car immediately ahead of
me until we got to the four lane and its traffic light. He chose the
right lane, I pulled alongside in the left, and I waved goodbye when the
light turned green.

Idiots abound. But only a very few of them bother me as I ride the bike.

See https://www.rxlist.com/claritin-side...rug-center.htm
some of the side effects a headache, sleepiness,
feeling tired, drowsiness, fatigue,...

(or maybe it is just old age creeping up on you :-)

I've suffered from asthma and bronchitis from allergies since I was a very small child. I 'grew out of it' in my late teens, and had only suffered hayfever types of reactions until recently, and they've been getting worse in the past few years. According to my allergist, it has as much to do with aging as anything. about 5 years ago, I was put on a daily inhaler (Qvair) which helped alot. The prescription was for 6 months, and it seemed to help for a few years after. until last year. Like you, I felt clear, but had no 'motor'. I went from finishing CX races just outside the top ten the year before to getting lapped well before the end of the race last year. Late last fall, the bronchitis came back. This year, I'm back in the same boat - another prescription for (Qvair).

My allergist said the fact that I couldn't keep up last summer/fall was the allergies, and even though I wasn't feeling any outward symptoms the issue was that my trachea and major airways were greatly restricted. He also said my single use inhaler (albuterol) wouldn't be very helpful, since those concentrate on the alveoli and branchioles, whereas my issue is in the trachea and major airways. I could confirm this from the fact that using my albuterol didn't really help.

I've been back on the Qvair daily inhaler since last october, and I already feel way better - workout efforts measured with computrainer sessions are a markedly improved over last fall.

Every person is different, and what I experience may not be what you're experiencing, but it's worth a visit to a respiratory specialist/allergist.

Well, I FEEL clear with the Claritin and nose sprays but I'm not moving like I should. Yesterday it was pretty clear and I did a short fast ride and even though it was short I hit a load of traffic lights so the 13.6 mph average was a lot faster than it sounds. Up-wind which I thought was downwind, I was holding a pretty constant 17 mph. Last year at this time with the pollen season gone I was holding 20 mph against noticeably stronger winds.

I can only hope that it is the allergies and that they will go away with the onset of Summer. But Wednesday evening they are promising up to an inch and a half of rain which is likely to start and entirely new round of grass pollen.

Thats exactly what I was going through, though I was taking Zirtec - Claritin makes me drowsy (though not as bad as benedryl, which is why most OTC sleep aids contain diphenhydramine hcl). I felt fine, I was training according to plan, but I was getting lapped. Go see an allergist that specializes in respiratory health, at the very least you'll get a clean bill of health and you'll know it's something else you should be looking at
