Default 24-38-50 front derailleur recomendation

1993 Miyata 1000 LT touring bike. Drive train is a Shimano Deore seven speed
with bar ends. The stock Deore derailleur isn't happy with the 24 (was a
28). 14x32 in the front. Using for loaded touring in hilly terrain and very
happy with the gearing except getting a more reliable shift to the 24 would
be good.

I have that combination of chain rings,
and the Ultegra front derailleur shifts it perfectly.

What a classic! Have you tried repositioning the derailleur -- it
should work since a 24t inner ring was a common option back in the
day, and the Deore derailleur was the de facto standard.

I've messed with it's position and limits a bit, and am reasonably
accomplished at adjusting drive trains. It works but just not as well as I
would like. May try a chain keeper and a little more travel to the inside.
Also a little locktite on the inner limit screw that seems to want to
wander.

Michael, thanks, if a chain keeper doesn't work out for me I'll snag an
Ultegra triple derailleur.

I use a Simplex Super LJ with 24-42-47 rings on my commuter with no
problems.

In years past I had a triple with 50-45-24 and used a Deore DX triple
front derailleur. Then changed to 48-45-24 rings and used a Sora
double front derailleur. Then 45-42-20 and the Sora double. All the
previous with bar end shifters. Now 44-33-20 and a Tiagra triple
front derailleur. This one with STI. Another bike has 52-42-24 and
uses a Shimano 105 triple front derailleur.
