CTC Cyclecover vs Contents Insurance
I just compared CTC cyclecover with the cover I get with my AA Contents
insureance. One Speedmachine with CTC Cyclecover - premium is £176. Only covered for theft if I lock it. House contents insurance covers that bike, plus the other six bikes (and treats them as personal possesions) and up to £45,000 of other stuff in the house - premium is £120. Time to ask the CTC why they keep promoting them. Or has anyone actually found CTC Cyclecover to be worthwhile? PhilO |

The AA were pretty good, but for the expensive bikes (the Streetmachine, Fiero and 8 Freight) we had to have them as specific named items. IIRC that cost a little more. Eventually ended up at Marks and Sparks, who cover any individual bikes up to £4K as part of the basic cost. The overall premium came in at less than the AA's, so we're with M&S now. Time to ask the CTC why they keep promoting them. Or has anyone actually found CTC Cyclecover to be worthwhile? We used Cyclecover for a year: time was running out to find a contents insurer who'd put 2 £1,800 bikes on, and we ran out of time so I used Cyclecover rather than nothing. Got stung for lots of money, and better prepared this year I started looking rather sooner. http://www.ctcforum.org.uk/MesReplis...cid=5&id=10054 has a rantI started on the CTC message board, and was not satisfactorily dealt with to my mind even though it was personally answered by the Director. Result: we are two ex-Cyclecover customers. It's ludicrously expensive for what you get IMHO. I found household insurance was about £100 a year more when covering all my bikes for use away from home. I've decided this year to take the risk myself when parking the bikes away from home. My commuter bike which is the one I would use for any trips to central Glasgow is only worth a couple of hundred so allowing for the excess on any claim the risk is fairly small and not worth £100 to insure against. My "good" bikes are not expensive by the standards of others on this group- a 10 yr old Galaxy and a £650 tandem - and not attractive to thieves I would have thought. They are only at risk when touring which I don't do in high risk areas. I found the premiums going up a certain amout for each bike listed despite the fact I would only use one at a time away from home. Given the fact that the excess meant a claim wouldn't be paid in full and the hassle factor involved in claims I think its worth the risk. Iain |
