New articles in Cyclops USA
The February issue of Cyclops USA points to Charles Howe's "Nevada City
Classic" article about that hilly criterium in California's Gold Country that has been contested annually since 1961. Greg Lemond showed what he could do there at an early age and a number of other great riders have tested themselves in this event. The March issue features "An Introduction to Bicycle Road Racing", also by Charles Howe. It is a seven-part slide show with the first four parts devoted to racing objectives, rules, tactics, hazards, physics, sociology and organizations and the last three covering history and lore, under the titles "Classic Races", "Women Led the Way", and "Contemporary Challenges". If anyone is interested, multi-time Nevada City Classic winner "Wild" Bill Wild continues to be active in the BC cycling scene as a properly fussy commissaire. The sad coda is that due to a heart problem, he's not allowed to ride a bike. -- Ryan Cousineau http://www.wiredcola.com/ "In other newsgroups, they killfile trolls." All can be seen at http://www.stanford.edu/~learnest/cyclops/ -Les Earnest I liked the earlier version of the course, with the ridiculous turn onto Pine Street. You're heading down Broad Street full-throttle straight into a row of hay bales. I remember one year a guy in front of me just froze and didn't seem to even try to make that turn. Just went straight into the hay bales. The year I was 4th as a Junior I won the coveted "classic" Pedali Alpini jersey given to the top-placing club member in that race. Guess we didn't have a strong team that year! That 4th place would be my best at Nevada City; the following two years I was 7th and then 11th. It was many years before I could watch the race as a spectator. There was always that voice inside telling you "You're supposed to be out there, not on the sidewalk!" The voice of unreason. ;-) --Mike Jacoubowsky Chain Reaction Bicycles www.ChainReaction.com Redwood City & Los Altos, CA USA |
