Default Helmets: Do you wear one? Why? When?

Ok I sometimes ride my unicycle with or without a helmet,
I personaly do not like helmet for they are big, bulky, and
quite uncomfortable. But I must admit it has saved a few
minor and major injuries in the past. When I'm in public I
won't wear one I'll just wear my hat, but if I'm not in public
and no one is around I'll wear one, but it depends wear I am,
so just in case I will bring one. So what do you think of this
industrial protective peice of gear? Do you wear one? Why? When?

It sounds to me like the reason you don't wear one isn't because of
comfort but because you are embarrassed by it.

I don't wear a helmet. I don't feel comfortable wearing a helmet. Maybe
I need to try some more expensive ones. I only occasionally wear one
for Ken Looi to keep him happy on Unicycle events he organises, but he
is still not happy so I don't think it's worth it.

I often get asked "Why don't you wear a helmet?" and I feel like a
hypocrit because I tell the kids to wear their helmet when I teach
them, and I tell them it is to keep them safe while they are learning
and to protect the school.

I think helmets are over-rated though and no where near enough emphasis
is put on the importance of wrist guards. They are uncomfortable to
wear, and get hot like helmets- but they could save your very valuable
asset your wrists and hands which could be sticking out to save your
head that is wearing a helmet. I don't wear wrist gaurds but a couple
of times I have wished I was wearing them.

The only reason I think I should wear a helmet is to set a good example
for the hundreds of riders who I inspire who may or may not have common
sense. I don't feel responsible for those who lack common sense.

I always wear a helmet and I urge you and every else to wear one as
well.

I don't want to get preachy, so I'll make it short. You don't have to
wear a motocross lid. Go to the local kmart or walmart and try on a
few cheap ones. You don't have to spend alot of money, nor do you have
to get something big or fancy. Just find something.

wait, so you found out that using a helmet was a good thing in a
accident, but then decided they were to hot? why would you do that?
I guess I would rather have some discomfort while riding, then to find
out that I needed a helmet on a ride.

I think even Ian would agree that if you determine that a helmet is an
asset, you should wear it.

I understand that if you determine that it is more dangerous to wear a
helmet, not to wear one. I don't believe that it is more dangerous,
but at least he has made a logical decision based on his beliefs. To
me it seems illogical to determine a helmet is safer, then not wear
one.

Really. So wearing full body armour (as worn by MTBers) would be safer
than not wearing it, so, in pursuit of logic, you wear full body armour
on every ride, without fail?

Rational decisions are made by comparing complex sets of benefits and
disadvantages and choosing an appropriate balance for the
circumstances.

On a hot day, I might rationally decide that the certainty of being too
hot for comfort in a helmet outweighed the very small probability of the
helmet being needed for protection on the ride I have planned.

On a technical ride or in heavy traffic, I might decide that he helmet
is essential despite the discomfort - or I might even choose not to
ride.
