Carl,

I assume Printer's Park was near the Printers and Typesetter Retirement
Home, that is now closed I believe. It was near the velodrome which is
where you trackies spent most of your time.

Monument Valley Park is next to Colorado College down by Monument Creek
which parallels I-25.

However, a suburban legend has it that Eddie B used to train the national
team in Monument Valley Park, where I put on my first 'cross races (and
still ride today).

Is that different than Printer's Park? Printer's Park (if it's still there)
was on, of course, Printer's Parkway, just east of the velodrome. We did
used to have some impromptu races there. The only formal "race" I recall (I
started going to the Springs in the winter in 1986) was Les Barczewski's
cyclocross race in January 1986, back when each club was required to put on
a race annually. Les was a one man club.

The Colorado Springs website
http://www.springsgov.com/Page.asp?NavID=788#M
doesn't list a Monument Valley Park.

Carl,

Brook is correct. The springs.gov website is notoriously defective, not
unlike a fair percentage of the local populace.

Monument Valley Park sits just east of Interstate 25 and runs north from
Bijou Street to Monroe Street. The north side of the park, past Uintah, is
a natural 'cross venue, with fast flats, short, steep runs, a ditch to
hurdle, stands of trees to wind through, a bowl-shaped soccer pitch with a
paved descent and staircase climb, and even an old stone staircase that
has fallen into some disrepair.

I put on races there for a few years in the early 1990s before a city
councilcreature walking his dog decided it was an inappropriate use of
city facilities and leaned on the parks department to give us the
heave-ho. It was a shame, 'cause it was (and is) a great venue, and we got
along quite well with the parks people.

Cheers,

Somewhere around 18 or so days of racing. All from my front door!!!

Keep up the good work Brian and crew!!!
Plus he helps with the CU team and is on the NCCA Board.

Nobody's taking anything away from Brian and his crew. They do a great
job. We're just happy to see Chris back. It sounds like they'll be
working together on at least one project.

I tip the old Mad Dog cycling beanie to anyone who puts on a well-run
race. It's hard, largely thankless work, and as in many other endeavors,
good help is hard to find. I recall sliding sideways down snowy
Hardscrabble Cañon some years back, in a 2WD truck full of 'cross kit, en
route to assist at a race in Pueblo's City Park, and thinking, "There must
be better ways to spend my weekends."

Wasn't it your race at Black Forest where locals were towing racer's
cars?? And you bailed 'em out? That was something.

I'm getting so old I don't remember particulars.

Oh, yeah,

That was one of ours. A bozo who lived nearby had a couple cars towed (he
and the county were locked in a steel-cage death match over whose property
lines went where, IIRC), and the bailout costs pretty much erased the take
for that day. What fun. It was on a par with the nitwit at Bear Creek East
Regional Park who loudly insisted on riding his horse across our course,
though we'd posted signs advising equestrians about the race two weeks in
advance and adopted the trails we used to ensure our access to them. Some
folks just have this brain-numbing allergy to bicycle racing.

We had joggers on the old Lake Montebello race course that would jog
head first into a ten up sprint, with 40 more riders behind them. We'd
have permits up and cops looking for them and they'd still lace up
and run. Give us officials a mouthful everytime they passed the
start/finish. One tried to 'take out' the pace car once because it was
'illegal'. (OK, maybe the way we were driving pushed the envelope.)

I think Bobby Phillips used the joggers to scrape off people trying to
come around on the last sprint - put your left pedal over the curb and
ride between the curb and jogger - pretty much a semi-legal pick.

I occasionally run over a jogger for old times sake as a result.

That's just proof that you're a nice guy with good judgement. By
picking the right time to run them over you prevent them from finishing
off their knees thereby giving them a chance, and some incentive to
take up something more sensible.
Wonderful of you to show such concern by pointing out the error of
their ways to your fellow athlete.
