The equivalent of Paris Hilton endorsing your favorite bicycle brand
in a leading bicycle magazine:

In case you are inexplicably unaware of who Olga was . . .

Olga Nethersole was a famous UK actress later charged in New York with
creating a public nuisance with her salacious appearance in "Sapho".
(War relief and charity work later gave her dignity and eventually a
CBE.)

In case you can't read Olga's handwriting . . .

Dear Sir,

Will you favor me by ordering another '96 Stearns bicycle to be
shipped to my London residence, Walsingham House, Picadilly.

The Stearns is the lightest & most durable wheel that I have ridden &
an ideal bicycle for women.

Yours very truly,

Olga Nethersole

***

The Paris, London, and NYC addresses are a nice touch, but what really
personalizes her stationery is that photo of Olga herself.

In case you want to see what a public nuisance looked like in 1900:

Good news--she won the court battle:

Oh, that 1896 Stearns woman's bicycle? Here's a saucy beauty employing
its coasting pegs:

An 1897 model, restored:

That's a nice looking bike, though the combination of a skirt-guard
and no front fender seems odd. Good poster, too. Were all Steams
"woman specific?"

Dear Brian,

Like many companies during the bike boom, E.C. Stearns made both men's
and women's safety bicycles, as well as lady-leading tandems.

Along with other manufacturers, Stearns jumped on the chainless
bandwagon that coincided with the collapse of the bike boom:
http://www.nostalgic.net/bicycle378.htm

Some Stearns bikes from 1898:

http://books.google.com/books?id=YrU...page&q&f=false

It was hard to make a generic fixie that was much different from the
others, so bicycle companies resorted to ads like the one with Olga's
letter--which was probably arranged through her business agent.

Stearns was one of a number of bike companies that survived to make
cars.

The only true lady's bicycle:

Dear Andrew,

The New Departure of 1896 is often cited as the first safety bicycle
coaster brake, despite its unusual design:

Thanks, I was unclear on the initial dates beyond 'sorta
pre-1900' and didn't see anything older than 1897 on a quick
search.

New Departures have at least one compelling feature in that
the disc assembly when (cheaply, easily) replaced leaves no
worn parts inside. Others are subject to (sometimes severe)
hubshell wear from the expanding brake shoes.

No flange thickness and no interlace, should make a fine wheel.

That odd front hub on that Stearns:

http://community.webshots.com/photo/...34422057ToGLlC

It's a Laass hub:

The strange idea illustrated in one patent witnessed by Laass, with
the inventors being Barnes & Barnes:
