The scary footage was recorded by police who took to their bikes in a crackdown on motorists endangering cyclists by driving too close.

Officers stopped nearly 50 drivers on Thursday, September 17, more than 30 of whom ended up facing prosecution for a variety of offences.

South Yorkshire Police’s latest Close Pass initiative took place on the A57 between Malin Bridge and the Peak District, close to Ladybower Reservoir, with police pedalling for nearly 80km as they tackled the route’s lung-bursting inclines over three hours.

Drivers must allow a gap of at least one and a half metres to safely overtake cyclists, with more space required at higher speeds, and officers stopped those who got too close.

On Thursday, 13 drivers were stopped and given advice, with 34 facing prosecution.

Traffic offence reports were issued to five motorists for careless and inconsiderate driving, for which there is a fixed penalty of £100 and three points on your licence, with greater punishment possible for the most serious examples.

Another 16 drivers were issued with reports for leaving their vehicle in a dangerous position, 10 for contravening double white lines, two for going through red lights and one for using a mobile phone at the wheel.
