First it was hug a hoodie - now Cameron's joined the Lycra louts

David Cameron has been accused of joining cycling's growing army of
'Lycra louts' who openly flout the rules of the road after he was
snapped riding through a red light.

The Tory leader, who sparked controversy last year with his 'hug a
hoodie' speech, breached the Highway Code as he cycled home through
London's Notting Hill. And although he had a helmet with him, Mr
Cameron decided not to wear it - leaving it dangling from his
handlebars.

The episode comes amid growing tension on the capital's streets
between law-abiding motorists and a hard core of cyclists who
routinely ride on pavements, ignore lights and signs and weave
dangerously through traffic.

....

In pictures taken on Wednesday evening in Portobello Road, Mr Cameron
approaches the crossroads at Westbourne Park Road with the lights
signalling him to stop. Then he edges across the white line, despite
the red light and, finally, crosses the yellow-box junction with the
lights still on red.

Hugh Bladon, of the Association of British Drivers, said: 'All
cyclists must obey the rules of the road. It does not matter who they
are.'

But a Conservative spokesman commented: 'Mr Cameron was riding
extremely carefully.'

Don't see many law abiding motorists where I live. The majority speed
and don't stop for red lights as long sas they can get past within a
few seconds of it going red. Not that two wrongs make a right of
course.

Are you suggesting that no London cyclists "openly flout" the rules of
the road, or that flouting them is a lol matter???

A black man joined the growing ranks of black criminals yesterday when
blah blah blah. Acceptable? Nope, the whole premise is based on a lie.
Cycling up 80% in London but accident rates have sharply declined. The
more cyclists there are the safer the roads become. Lazy, dishonest
reporting.

Are you basing that "accident" assertion on the "official" police
casualty statistics, have you made it up yourself, or do you actually
have a /reliable/ source for it?

it is the daily mail, mind you as a MP and a fairly imporant one at that
red light jumping is hardly sending the right message across.

Law-abiding motorists? You have them in London, do you? I wonder why
the rest of the country can't have them as well :-)

A law-abiding driver:

Driver sought after cyclist dies.

A 26-year-old cyclist has died in a hit-and-run collision in East
Sussex.

Strange to ponder too that the number of uninsured cars in the UK
outnumber the total sum of cycling commuters.
(1.25 m v 1m).

When the explosion in cycling in London (despite no infrastructure
spending rather than because of any) was reported by The Mail's
sister rag the Evading Standard, they made great play of the increased
safety levels and more civilised road environment. City Cylists have
more on this, interesting stuff.

I've always wondered why he carries a helmet dangling from his
bars. Any clues?

Peter.
