Default Cyclist seriously injured and man arrested following crash in Oldham

Another unfit driver arrested.
QUOTE:
A cyclist has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after a collision on a busy road in Oldham.

Emergency services were called to reports of a collision between a cyclist and a van on Huddersfield Road, in Lees, at around 5.15pm on Thursday.

The cyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

A 35-year-old man arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs is due to be questioned by police.

Huddersfield Road (A62) is currently closed in both directions following the collision, which happened between Dunham Street and Culvert Street.

The road has been closed since around 6.30pm.

An air ambulance is reported to have landed at a local school.

Man Traffic tweeted: "A62 Huddersfield Rd, Waterhead in Oldham "UPDATE: Involves a cyclist and van at Stamford Rd. Air Ambulance landed near the Academy.

"Closures in place from Culvert St to Dunham St. Avoid the area, traffic very slow on approach."

Stotts Buses (Oldham) also reported details of the incident on their Twitter account.

They wrote: "Unfortunately our 343 service can not access Huddersfield Road to and from Oldham to Hyde and vice versa due to a serious RTA the service is following a diversion from Springhead. "Thankyou for your understanding".

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 5.15pm on Thursday 6 August 2020, police were called to reports of a collision between a cyclist and a van on Huddersfield Road in Lees.

"Emergency services attended and the cyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"A 35-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs. He remains in custody for questioning and enquiries are ongoing."
