The description seems to suggest that the lorry turned left across the path of the cyclists, not that the cyclists failed to stop at the junction: "travelling down Cromford Hill to turn left into Water Lane while about eight youngsters on bikes rode in the same direction." If that's the case, I'm not sure how that is "an accident waiting to happen". Maybe my interpetation is wrong. A lot depends on whether the lorry overtook the cyclists then turned, or if the cyclists were riding up the inside of slower traffic. |

That very observation tends to indicate he was moving reasonably fast and therefore the statements: about eight youngsters on bikes rode in the same direction. The lorry driver didn't see him. is likely to be wrong. You can hardly not notice 8 kids on bikes when you pass them. But as usual in such cases once his cab had passed them it was probably out of sight out of mind. Tony |

I understood that the cyclists had come along water lane toward Cromford hill, the lorry was driving along cromford hill and therefore had no requirement to stop or give way to the minor road. |

Which bit of "He said the lorry, which he believed was 16 tonnes, had been travelling down Cromford Hill to turn left into Water Lane while about eight youngsters on bikes rode in the same direction." did you misunderstand? Tony then why did they stop at the junction? or not as the case may be. perhaps the witness is confused. If they were trying to undertake the lorry as it turned left then they are even stupider than the average cyclist. |

Tony I would certainly not attempt to undertake it, perhaps the cycle had no brakes (another common cycle fault) |

Possibly they were riding on the pavement. 6 stopped at the junction to let the lorry, which had right of way, to pass. One beat the lorry and one of them failed to stop in time and rode into the side of the lorry. |
